Between April 2022 and March 2023 we recorded 254 pieces of feedback about GP services across Somerset; over half were about difficulties people experienced accessing services or booking an appointment. As a result, we decided to find out more about people's experiences of accessing GP care in Somerset. We carried out a county-wide public engagement project between August 2023 and March 2024; the report about that project will be published in 2024.

Healthcare expenditure is one of the largest elements, and a growing proportion, of public spending. In the context of limited resources, it is essential for patients and policy-makers to understand the return on investment in health care. Productivity, the ratio of output produced to input used, is therefore a key performance metric for the English NHS. In addition, measuring NHS productivity growth is an important tool for assessing future funding needs. Finally, in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, evaluating the extent to which the NHS has recovered to pre-pandemic levels of productivity is of great policy relevance. In this report we extend previous investigations into NHS productivity growth carried out at the University of York. Embedded in National Accounting Systems, we use an index number approach, to calculate growth in both NHS inputs, outputs and productivity. Outputs are also adjusted for the quality of care provided. We focus on two time periods: 2020/21 to 2021/22; 2019/20 to 2021/22.

The Health and Care Act 2022 gives the Care Quality Commissions (CQC) new powers that allow them to provide a meaningful and independent assessment of care at a local authority and integrated care system level. This will enable the CQC to start to understand the quality of care in a local area or system and provide independent assurance to the public of the quality of care in their area. Healthwatch Darlington worked in partnership with the Darlington Borough Council (DBC) Adult Social Care Team to undertake research into the lived experience of people who receive input from Adult Social Care. This is a pilot project to discover what works best for Darlington.
