Healthwatch Gateshead released their annual survey for public engagement in order to establish our priorities to work on for the upcoming financial year 2026-2027. The survey was advertised on Healthwatch Gateshead social media pages and public engagement took place in localities throughout the period of eight weeks as the survey was active. We received 278 responses in total which provided insights and experiences on a range of health and/or social care services which were accessed in Gateshead in the past 12 months.

Gaining reflective feedback from patients with significant care needs post- discharge from hospital remains a challenge, creating gaps in understanding whether the hospital discharge pathway serves as an effective process. This research project sought to address this gap by developing a survey to collect feedback from patients, particularly focusing on those discharged on pathway 0, who identify as having no care needs upon discharge. By capturing these experiences, Healthwatch Gateshead aimed to assess the system's efficiency and identify areas for improvement to ensure patients experience a smooth, supportive transition home after hospital treatment.

This briefing suggests that people are unaware of the challenges of the social care system and thus are likely not preparing for a future in which they may have to meet significant care costs or care themselves. It found that only 19% of the general public correctly guessed that the cost of professional home care services could cost more than 1,000 per week - most thought the cost was lower, with almost half (47%) thinking costs were between 200 and 600 a week on average.
