Lack of NHS dental care provision is a national issue. Local Healthwatch across England have been hearing about problems with access, costs and communication. Healthwatch Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire (BNSSG) represents people across the local area. Our staff have heard from all three areas about the difficulties that the dental crisis is causing . This report explores the human stories behind the statistical headlines. It marks the culmination of several years of feedback we have received , and the concerns of local and national dental providers regarding the ongoing effects of dental neglect.

At Healthwatch St Helens, we wanted to develop a better understanding of what our residential care providers are delivering and what would help them to enhance the care they deliver every day. We deliver a very successful Enter & View programme across St Helens and we felt this work would complement this, in helping us to increase our awareness of what is standard practice across care homes, what is working well, and what isn't working so well. With support from our colleagues at St Helens Council Adult Social Care Team, we developed a survey that we sent out to all residential care providers in St Helens. Our aim was to give providers the opportunity to highlight any areas where they feel they need further support to deliver the best possible care. 15 providers returned completed surveys to us.

Details:

We talked with senior adult social care staff at Buckinghamshire Council and looked at the social care feedback and signposting we responded to in 2024. We decided to look at the first stage of many people's journey into looking for care or support for an adult - finding what's available and how to get it. There are various ways to access this information. We agreed a mystery shopping exercise would help identify what worked well and where improvements could be made. We wanted to share this with the people who provide these services, so they could understand people's experiences of seeking care, often for the first time.
