The findings of this report suggest a correlation between obesity and economic inactivity, as well as obesity affecting the productivity and wellbeing of people who are in work. Obesity is not a personal responsibility - it is caused by working conditions, changes in the built environment, and our broken food system. Polling for this report shows that the public are ahead of politicians: they want government intervention and a break from failed policies focused on individual responsibility. Drawing from previous IPPR research, the main recommendation is based on developing a whole-society approach to tackling obesity.

The National Diabetes Foot Care Audit (NDFA) has published a State of the Nation report for 2018 to 2023. Based on data from England and Wales from 1 Apr 2018 to 31 Mar 2023, it details the findings and recommendations relating to the assessment, outcomes and participation in the NDFA for this period. Ulceration of the foot in people living with diabetes presents significant challenges, including emotional, physical and financial costs, and is associated with increased risk of both amputation and death. It affects between 1 and 2% of all people with diabetes each year and its management accounts for approximately 1% of the total NHS budget. The overall aim of the NDFA is to measure factors associated with increased risk of ulcer onset and adverse ulcer outcomes, and to share information relating to best clinical practice

Pharmacies in the UK dispense millions of prescription items each year. Since 2021 there have been reports of increasing supply problems affecting medicines. Recent media coverage has highlighted shortages of medicines used to treat diabetes, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and epilepsy, as well as hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and others. This briefing provides information on the causes and consequences of medicines shortages in the UK and internationally, and the UK government's approach to addressing supply problems.

This report confirms widening inequalities in life expectancy between regions in England and within local authorities since 2010. These widening inequalities are associated with an average reduction in local authority spending power of 34%. The study looked at every local authority in England and, for each, plotted levels of health, inequalities in health, and cuts in their spending power. Local authorities fund many of the services (such as housing, education and social care) that support or ameliorate the drivers of health inequalities. The report shows that since 2010, central government spending cuts to local authorities were highest in areas with lower life expectancy and more health inequalities, further harming health in these places.

This report calls for all local authorities to radically improve the way they deliver adaptations. Age UK says that an overhaul of the system is required to help older people to live independently for longer and reduce pressure on NHS and care services. Two-thirds of local authorities took longer than the recommended six months to deliver an adaptation through the Disabled Facilities Grant, with the longest taking more than 24 months.

The key themes emerging from the report are: pay and conditions; training; career development; regulation and registration; equality, diversity and inclusion; mental and physical health; and leadership and management. It was widely agreed across stakeholder policy and literature that pay and conditions need to be improved for the social care workforce. There were also some arguments for linking pay scales to the NHS Agenda for Change pay bands or to living wage levels.

Men's sheds have been identified as one way to promote men's health and wellbeing, and reduce health and social inequalities for men who might otherwise avoid traditional health services. Historically, hospices have struggled to reach men who have a life-limiting illness, or who care (or cared for) ill partners and maybe find themselves alone for the first time in their lives. The aim of the study was to identify an established men's shed group and spend time with them to learn about what makes the group successful, then use this knowledge to encourage the development of other men's shed groups across the hospice sector.
