Healthwatch Stockton - on - Tees

Healthwatch Stockton - on - Tees worked in partnership with the Teeswide Safeguarding Adults Board to promote National Safeguarding Adults Week (NSAW). In the first instance this provided an opportunity to raise awareness of Safeguarding, while providing an opportunity to speak to service users. Change Grow Live (CGL) offered us their facilities to deliver a coffee morning, promoting partnership working and supporting access to vulnerable communities. During the planning phase of this piece of work, it was identified that Public Health Stockton - on - Tees were in the initial phase of the development of a peer - led service to support health and wellbeing within the Stockton - on - Tees area. After further discussions with Public Health, professionals, and the Healthwatch Stockton - on - Tees Executive Board it was decided that it would be useful to extend this workplan item to enable additional intelligence gathering that would support the future planning and development of local health and care services. The particular focus of this workplan item is to improve support for family, carers, and service users of drug and alcohol services by producing effective recommendations, based on service user feedback gathered. The aim of this project was to understand why people who are among the 20% most deprived in England and those who belong to marginalised communities are under - represented in receiving healthcare, and where it was possible about services that relate to the treatment of five common conditions. We explored the experiences of people living in the most deprived areas of Bristol and North Somerset in relation to accessing healthcare. The focus of our engagement activities increased our likelihood of meeting people with mental health issues, learning disabilities, recent immigrants, recent mothers, and those in homeless and traveller communities. We wanted to identify barriers they may be experiencing, so we were especially interested in how and when they access care and if they don't access care, why? We recognise the extreme pressure that practices are facing, especially in areas of higher deprivation and that when healthcare is received it is usually perceived as good and caring. The greatest barrier to under - served or under - represented groups receiving care is the means of access. [less]

'I can still swing a spade', a qualitative exploratory study of gardening groups for people with dementia

This exploratory qualitative study aimed to evidence how community - based gardening groups can be used to support the psychological, physical and social health of those living with dementia. The views of people living with dementia in the community, care partners and group leaders were sought to better understand the benefits gained from gardening groups, as well as the features of gardening groups that are cited as enabling positive out - comes. Going beyond the existing single - group studies in this area, this research aimed to identify common themes across multiple gardening groups. Semi - structured interviews were conducted with six group leaders, three people living with dementia and ten care part - ners from seven gardening groups, either in person or remotely. Thematic analysis of the interview transcripts highlighted broad enablers - 'the garden setting', 'features of activities' and 'organisational components' - that were cited as facilitating a range of positive wellbeing outcomes, creating an environment that provides 'physical and cognitive benefits', 'affirm - ation of identity', 'social connection' and 'benefits for care partners and others'. The wide - ranging benefits and enablers cited by participants within this research support the use of gardening groups as community - based interventions to reinforce positive psychological, physical and social outcomes for people with dementia. English literacy as a barrier to participation in clinical trials - MAPLE REND Project

The MAPLE project led by the Bristol Biomedical Research Centre, aims to co - produce an accessible patient information leaflet (PIL) that will aim to improve diversity in those who choose to take part in clinical research. The first stage of this work is to understand the barriers preventing people taking part in clinical research and gain views on how existing, accessible PILs may address these barriers. National Voices was commissioned to work with relevant charities and the people they advocate for to understand barriers to participation in clinical research, including, but not limited to literacy. An NHS aiming to be both patient - centred and evidence - based needs a coherent evidence base for patient experience. Medical research databases are in daily use across the NHS. But historically there has been no equivalent for patient experience evidence. So we built the Patient Experience Library to plug that gap. We have spent the last few years cataloguing tens of thousands of documents on patient experience and engagement. In doing so, we have noticed a lot of duplication. There are, for example, hundreds of reports on people's experiences of trying to get a GP appointment. And they all say much the same thing. We also noticed gaps in the evidence base. It is hard to find studies on topics such as people's understanding of advance care planning, or experiences of pelvic mesh, or the intersection between religious faith and experiences in healthcare. Why, we wondered, does the evidence on patient experience seem so patchy? How, exactly, does the variability manifest itself? And (in an NHS that says it wants to tackle health inequalities) who gets heard, and who doesn't? At the start of 2023, we decided to go looking for answers. [less]
