Three Hospitals Three Weeks, Patient experiences at Norfolk Hospitals

During the summer of 2023 we spent a week at James Paget University Hospital, Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, and The Queen Elizabeth Hospital. We also spent a day at Cromer Hospital. We wanted to find out about the patient journey, we wanted to know what was working well and what could be improved. We visited outpatient clinics, patients on wards, and Accident and Emergency to speak with patients, their carers, and their visitors. While we were there we made observations and spoke to staff about their experiences too. There were four different surveys and the surveys were available online until the end of our visits across all the hospitals for people who were not at the hospital the week we visited. We also handed out surveys for people to send back to us in the post. This report summarises the findings across all of the hospitals, we wrote more detailed individual reports for each of the hospitals. We received 1, 416 responses to our surveys, we made 56 observations, and took 37 staff experiences. [less]

Community anchor organisations work with communities who often experience inequality and disadvantage. This research project used community - based participatory research within a case study approach to work with 4 community anchor organisations, focussing on their role and activities in tackling health inequalities by developing relationships with people through access to the environment and creative activity. Additional questions explored how the wider public health system supported this activity and the potential for scaling up these approaches at place level. Our research investigated how staff, users, management and external agencies viewed this activity and its potential for scaling up, and what factors facilitated or blocked the potential for scaling up. The purpose of the project was to work with the community anchor organisations to consider with them how they worked to address inequality through using arts/culture/access to the environment and how this activity could be 'scaled up'. All four community anchors had developed ways of providing a space for creative or nature - based activity. The key challenge they faced was ensuring that funders and decision makers understood the importance of this approach within the context of their wider service offer. The project's aim was to capture how these community anchor organisations understood 'scaling up' and then to identify the challenges they faced achieving this within their local context and the context of the wider public health ecosystem. Excellence through equality - Anti - racism as a quality improvement tool

A report from the NHS Confederation's BME Leadership Network (BLN) found that despite some progress highlighted by the Workforce Race Equality Standard (WRES), views on local NHS leadership diversity and trends captured across staff surveys remain stagnant. Additionally, racialised patients encounter disparities, exemplified by the fact that black British mothers experience mortality rates up to five times higher than those of white mothers during pregnancy or within the initial six weeks after childbirth. The Race and Health Observatory also found that in comparison with white British people - with the exception of Chinese people - people from minoritised ethnic groups experienced worse outcomes, waited longer for assessment times and were less likely to receive a course of treatment following assessment. Despite efforts to address disparities faced by racialised staff and patients, systemic discrimination continues to exist and more comprehensive measures are necessary to eliminate such healthcare inequalities.
